Poulenc's Sonata for Two Pianos presents a brisk, often sardonic yet lyrical character, switching between percussive bravura and delicate, pianissimo singing that requires very precise articulation. Technically, pay special attention to Analysis harmonique (3.6/5): you must quickly grasp shifting harmonic progressions to balance voices and bring out inner melodies, and to Polyrhythmie 2 contre 3 (3.1/5), which demands tight rhythmic control — the concrete gesture here is to internalize subdivisions and align accents between the two instruments rather than literally counting every note. The piece belongs to Poulenc's modern period and occupies a significant place in his duo-piano repertoire, exploiting contrasting timbres and the composer's later harmonic language.
