This Elegy for two pianos has a restrained, tense stillness, built from spaced chords and melancholic overlaps between the two keyboards rather than an overtly lyrical melody. You will need to focus on the Polyrhythm 2 against 3 (3.1/5), which requires precise alignment of attacks — in practice that means subdividing and sharing the pulse cleanly between the two players so the deliberate displacement stays controlled — and on Dynamics (2.5/5) to shape the inner voices and sustained soft textures without losing clarity. The piece belongs to Poulenc's modern period and is one of his works for two pianos, exploring an intimate, contrapuntal side of the duo repertoire.
