What to play next?
Each suggestion combines difficulty gap, risk, confidence and skill overlap. The first two cards in each column are the most useful pedagogically.
Gentle step
The safest next step.
Gentle
Music for Marcel Duchamp
John Cage
partial transfer
low risk

A short step up — but it is the one that moves you into Elementary (around grade 3 ABRSM/RCM). The skill that will carry the work: Connaissance des formes — understand the form and the harmony before memorising, or memory collapses the moment you play for someone.
Gentle
Gavotte in G major
George Frideric Handel
close skills
low risk

A short step up — but it is the one that moves you into Elementary (around grade 3 ABRSM/RCM). The skill that will carry the work: Style baroque and Ornements baroque — the notes are not enough: articulation and ornaments follow performance conventions best checked in an urtext edition.
Balanced step
A genuine step up, without a jolt.
Ambitious challenge
A useful leap with guided practice.
Challenge
Suite infantil no. 1, A.53
Heitor Villa-Lobos
close skills
high risk

An ambitious leap into Elementary (around grade 4 ABRSM/RCM) — only worth starting if the practice time is really there. New compared with the previous piece: Style moderne et contemporain and Analyse harmonique — the notes are not enough: articulation and ornaments follow performance conventions best checked in an urtext edition.
Challenge
Ikonit, suite for piano, op. 6
Einojuhani Rautavaara

An ambitious leap into Elementary (around grade 4 ABRSM/RCM) — only worth starting if the practice time is really there. New compared with the previous piece: Polyphonie à deux voix and Style baroque — practise it slowly and hands separately before any attempt at tempo: that is where tension builds up.
The fourth movement reads as a playful, pointillistic piece where the toy piano's metallic, percussive timbre produces sharp gestures rather than long singing lines. Technically, you will need to address Ornaments (baroque) (4.1/5) by executing very short, consistent attacks so trills and grace notes remain clear on an instrument with almost no sustain, and Form Knowledge (4.1/5) by identifying and shaping the short recurring cells so the structure stays comprehensible despite the brevity of events. The work holds a singular place in the composer's output as an exploration of unconventional timbre and fragmented formal thinking rather than a conventional piano solo piece.
