What to play next?
Each suggestion combines difficulty gap, risk, confidence and skill overlap. The first two cards in each column are the most useful pedagogically.
Gentle step
The safest next step.
Gentle
Music for Marcel Duchamp
John Cage
partial transfer
low risk

A short step up — but it is the one that moves you into Elementary (around grade 3 ABRSM/RCM). The skill that will carry the work: Connaissance des formes — understand the form and the harmony before memorising, or memory collapses the moment you play for someone.
Gentle
Gavotte in G major
George Frideric Handel

A short step up — but it is the one that moves you into Elementary (around grade 3 ABRSM/RCM). The skill that will carry the work: Style baroque and Ornements baroque — the notes are not enough: articulation and ornaments follow performance conventions best checked in an urtext edition.
Balanced step
A genuine step up, without a jolt.
Ambitious challenge
A useful leap with guided practice.
Challenge
Suite infantil no. 1, A.53
Heitor Villa-Lobos
close skills
high risk

An ambitious leap into Elementary (around grade 4 ABRSM/RCM) — only worth starting if the practice time is really there. New compared with the previous piece: Style moderne et contemporain and Analyse harmonique — the notes are not enough: articulation and ornaments follow performance conventions best checked in an urtext edition.

Ikonit, suite for piano, op. 6

An ambitious leap into Elementary (around grade 4 ABRSM/RCM) — only worth starting if the practice time is really there. New compared with the previous piece: Polyphonie à deux voix and Style baroque — practise it slowly and hands separately before any attempt at tempo: that is where tension builds up.
The piece has the feel of a set of incisive, percussive miniatures where rhythmic clarity and well-placed silences give each short statement room to breathe rather than unfolding a long lyrical line. Technically, you will need to work on Ornements baroque (4.1/5) by executing quick, light, detached taps on the toy piano without dampening them, and on Connaissance des formes (4.1/5) by clearly mapping reprises and micro-sections so you can shape dynamics and tension across very brief segments. In the composer's output, this Suite for toy piano reflects his interest in unconventional instruments and in reducing material to simple, repeated cells rather than fitting into the standard pianistic tradition.
