What to play next?
Each suggestion combines difficulty gap, risk, confidence and skill overlap. The first two cards in each column are the most useful pedagogically.
Gentle step
The safest next step.
Gentle
Sonata no. 3 in F major, op. 46
Dmitry Kabalevsky
close skills
low risk
to confirm
A short step up, staying in Intermediate (around grade 6 ABRSM/RCM). New compared with the previous piece: Indépendance des mains and Connaissance des formes — practise it slowly and hands separately before any attempt at tempo: that is where tension builds up.
Gentle
Nocturne, op. 33, "Hommage to John Field"
Samuel Barber
close skills
low risk
to confirm
A short step up, staying in Intermediate (around grade 6 ABRSM/RCM). New compared with the previous piece: Voix chantante and Style moderne et contemporain — the notes will be secure long before the musical line: work in whole phrases, singing the main voice.
Balanced step
A genuine step up, without a jolt.
Balanced
Piano Sonata no. 1 in D minor
Erich Wolfgang Korngold
close skills
moderate risk
to confirm
A real step up: this piece moves you into Advanced (around grade 7 ABRSM/RCM). The skill that will carry the work: Connaissance des formes and Style moderne et contemporain — understand the form and the harmony before memorising, or memory collapses the moment you play for someone.
Balanced
Piano Sonata no. 2, op. 26
Fernando Lopes-Graça
close skills
moderate risk

A real step up: this piece moves you into Advanced (around grade 7 ABRSM/RCM). New compared with the previous piece: Polyphonie à deux voix and Connaissance des formes — practise it slowly and hands separately before any attempt at tempo: that is where tension builds up.
Ambitious challenge
A useful leap with guided practice.
Challenge
Piano Sonata in E flat minor, op. 26
Samuel Barber
close skills
high risk
to confirm
An ambitious leap into Advanced (around grade 8 ABRSM/RCM) — only worth starting if the practice time is really there. The skill that will carry the work: Connaissance des formes and Style moderne et contemporain — understand the form and the harmony before memorising, or memory collapses the moment you play for someone.
Challenge
Piano Sonata no. 3 in A minor, op. 28, "From Old Notebooks"
Sergei Prokofiev
close skills

Klavierstück in B flat major
Percy Grainger
partial transfer
low risk

Equivalent demands, still Intermediate (around grade 6 ABRSM/RCM): what changes is the ground. What changes is the skill in play: Indépendance des mains and Style moderne et contemporain — practise it slowly and hands separately before any attempt at tempo: that is where tension builds up.

This III. Adagio mesto projects a mood of tense stillness and suspended harmony, where silences and ringing sonorities create a slow unease rather than simple lyricism. You will need to focus on Analysis harmonique (3.6/5) to map chord progressions and shape inner lines through careful voicing and pedal control, and on Polyrhythmie 2 contre 3 (3.1/5) which requires aligning different subdivisions between the hands with controlled phrasing and wrist/forearm independence. The piece comes from the modern period and functions as the introspective slow movement within Barber's piano sonata repertoire. I do not provide a reference recording here, out of caution.
