Papillons has a light, fluttering character, built from small dancing cells and unexpected accents that suggest butterflies flitting from one motif to another. You will need to work specifically on Tempo rubato (3.1/5), learning to bend the length of short phrases subtly without losing the underlying pulse — for example, slightly delaying the right hand on an ornamental figure while keeping the bass steady — and on the Sustain pedal (3.1/5), which requires very controlled use, often half-pedal or quick releases to blend colors without blurring articulations. From the Romantic period and published as a very early opus (op. 2), it belongs to Schumann’s initial piano publications and illustrates his taste for short, contrasting character pieces.
