These Three Preludes on Gregorian melodies convey a hushed, contemplative mood, built on long melodic lines and subtle harmonic color rather than overt virtuosity. Practically, you will need to work the Tempo rubato (3.1/5) by developing a precise elasticity of pulse — small, controlled lengthenings and shortenings of notes without losing the underlying beat — and the Sustain Pedal (Pédale de sustain, 3.1/5), which requires very fine pedal placement and release to keep the voices clear. The piece sits within the composer's romantic-period output and is one of his more intimate works for solo piano drawing on ancient melodic material. I do not provide a recommended recording here because I am not sufficiently certain of a single authoritative interpretation for this specific set of preludes.
