This Elegy unfolds a tense melancholy, often carried by sustained resonances and descending lines that suspend time rather than simply declaim it. The main technical challenges for the student are Tempo rubato (3.1/5) and Pedal sustain (3.1/5): the Tempo rubato here requires subtle control of tiny delays and advances to let the phrase breathe without upsetting the harmonic line, while the Pedal sustain demands precise, often partial pedaling to keep resonance without blurring the voices. The piece belongs to the Romantic period and reflects Liszt's interest in transcribing and virtuoso treatment of borrowed motifs rather than his large-scale showpieces.
